Bibliotherapy & ADHD: Building Empathy Through Children’s Literature

Research Project on ADHD Literature Curriculum
Fall 2025

This project explores how picture books can support children with ADHD and foster inclusive classroom environments. Drawing on research about bibliotherapy and social learning theory, I curated and analyzed ten diverse children’s books that represent the ADHD experience—from inattentive daydreaming to hyperactive energy to emotional regulation challenges.

Each book annotation includes discussion questions and classroom activities designed to help students with ADHD see themselves reflected in literature while building empathy and understanding among their neurotypical peers. Through this work, I discovered the profound impact of representation in children’s literature and developed practical strategies for using read-alouds as tools for self-awareness, emotional growth, and community-building in elementary classrooms.
